CDBaby Digital Distribution – How 2 Make Lemonade

How 2 Make Lemonade

How 2 make lemonade is the question of the day, in view of the changes in the music industry.and perhaps my initial judgment was hasty. What we have here is the classic case of lemons. What to do? How 2 make lemonade.

A few days ago I posted about BookBaby.com comparing them to booklocker.com, ridiculing CDBaby Digital Distribution. I made an error there. Steaming songs on YouTube is not for free. YouTube is a streaming service just like Spotify, amazon music, iTunes, Deezer and all the rest.

YouTube pays the least of them all, I’m told. But a picture is worth a thousand words, in promotions. The exposure in video is maximized if you produce and distribute interesting content. Users need to be interested.

CDBabyDigital Distribution

The following is a letter from Jay with CDBaby answering my statement about them putting my songs on YouTube and I probably agreed to it somewhere along the way for some promise of monetization. I really don’t recall, however, in fairness CDBaby always seems to ask what course you’d prefer.

Thing is, if you read his letter here below you see the choices are stream your songs or figure out how to promote and sell them yourself. Trouble is the model has changed. No longer do people buy song downloads. They have become accustomed to streaming as the method of user interface.

Lemons, that’s what we got. But maybe not. Knowing what we know about content driven traffic maybe we can make more money with our songs, through competing with ourselves, than we ever could have trying to compete with the talent and the record company resources.

“CD Baby Artist Services (CD Baby)

Hi Chris,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. Sorry for the late reply! With COVID causing everyone to cancel their shows we’ve had more submissions than we’ve ever had before and we’re struggling to keep pace… Clearly we still have a way to go before we get there. Thank you for your patience.

That said, there is no “free YouTube plays”. YouTube Music is a streaming service just like Apple Music and Spotify. You’re paid a small amount per spin. We understand that it’s a very small amount. You’re free to opt-out of streaming if you choose to, but CD Baby has seen time and again that artists who allow their music to be streamed make more money than artists who don’t.

I know this doesn’t make fix the small streaming amounts, but hopefully it can help you understand how things are working.

Best,

Jay

“Just want to ask here, How are Artists supposed to earn a living with all the streaming and free YouTube plays?”

It Is What It Is, As They Say

I went into Wal Mart tonight to return something. As I was leaving the electronics department I turned a corner and saw vinyl records in a rack perhaps 20 feet long. There below the record selection of real albums on vinyl were numerous varieties of turntables to play the vinyl discs.

About fifteen years ago I read an article how, due to the superior sound some people were returning to vinyl records for their preferred medium of listening pleasure. I asked my friend Paul (a professional and fairly successful recording artist sine 1970) “Hey Paul when are you going to produce your records on vinyl again.” He laughed. Guess what? Paul is on vinyl with his latest album, Branching Roots HEREWal Mart now deems vinyl records as a worthwhile offer once again.

Wouldn’t it be wild if things ended up going full circle back to the superior sound of the vinyl records? About $ 20.00 per album at Wal Mart, to get some great music and it allows you to pick the album to set the mood. Won’t be long until they are building magnetic tape and reel to reel recorders, again for the warmer tone of analog recording. End of the crunchy tin foilesque brittle sibilant digital freeze-dried process?

OPPORTUNITY

All speculation aside, I apologize to CDBaby for my mistake in thinking they were streaming my songs for free when I was actually earning some fraction of a hundreth or a thousandth of a penny for each spin (?) vinyl records and CD’s spin. But hey, whose counting microscopic portions of a penny? Three or Four Million streams and you can afford a book of stamps to write home. But, Just E mail it.

Seeking the recipe, how 2 make lemonade, with the lemons, the sugar, the water. Starting here with several hundred followers I probably would not have if I had not run across CDBaby and the CDBaby digital distribution, a couple guitars a computer a little bit of know how.  I’m at chrisqueen.hearnow.com, with my CD and streaming “Look Up Now.” Or Look Up Now on YouTube, also on Amazon (CD) So let’s give it whirl!  You can sign up for spotify, amazon music, iTunes or Deezer while you are there.

Thank you for visiting my site. Thank you for reading my post. Thank you in advance for streaming my songs. I hope they bring you enjoyment and comfort. Please like them, if you like them. Please if you have any comments leave them below. If you have any questions leave them there too. I will reply. Thank you again. Chris.

Review of The Week – Angela Hoy

Books in review fits seamlessly here, this being a website to learn not only online book selling for authors, but other creators as well. Creative content producers from any genre find that online business sells whatever it is the creator has to offer. Recording Artist, Bloggers, Podcasters must all have a successful traffic strategy to win the day.

The book review I plan to do weekly of course depending on time as allowed. It is further fresh content providing value to my visitors who wish to choose books with some insight as to what is between the covers.

The books I will review are aimed at our goal to sell more of our creative results online whether it be books, songs, movie scores, screen plays or what have you.

Staying with that theme I will begin by reviewing my own publisher’s book. Angela Hoy has accomplished much in this area of our interest. She owns Booklocker.com self-publishing. I believe, based on firsthand experience this is simply the best place to publish your book in the Print On Demand (POD) industry.

Her book, Profitable Email Publishing, How To Publish A Profitable EMag by Angela Adair-Hoy Writer’sWeekly.com, gives a great overview of the subject of publishing a monthly, bi-weekly or weekly online news and professional magazine. I am currently thinking about what to name mine.

Angela Says: “My E mag, Writer’s Weekly.com generates tens of thousands of dollars in profits every year. Yours can too. This will be the purpose of the Books in Review pages and posts in this website. Generation of traffic for our websites and quality content and services providing value to visitors to make them returning readers.

Angela and Richard are my publishers at Booklocker.com and Abuzz Press. They genuinely care for us who are authors in their business, Yesterday, as an example, I was waiting on this book and another I had purchased at booklocker.com. I mentioned it to her telling her in passing I was still waiting for delivery, due to the COVID-19.

Angela knew I wanted to make use of the book. She had one of her staff send the E book to me in an E mail. Customer service like this is normally not found. So I am happy to begin my reviews here with her book.

Very Useful Book

Content in a book, like content in a website post, page or EZine must be of value to your readers. The value in the book under review is stated concisely by the author, Angela Hoy, herself in her Preface where she says this:

“My E mag Writer’sWeekly.com generates tens of thousands of dollars in profits each year. Yours can too! Sales of my e books alone generate more than $5K in revenues.” This book is obviously a benefit to Angela, her business and you and I.

The book is concisely written to provide interviews with several other successful EZine Publishers, their stories and the success facilitated by them deciding to publish these online magazines.

These include, Chris Gore Film Threat E zine. After three years he then boasted 84,000 subscribers. Jerry Parkins, A1 Freebies Online and A1 Paychecks Online whose motto is “Try to be the person your dog thinks you are.” And the incredibly successful Ray Owens Joke A Day who then had 150,000 subscribers after beginning by sharing jokes between him and 8 buddies.
Angela at the date of her book being published in 2001 boasted 37,000 subscribers to Writer’sWeekly.com

Amazing How To Outline

Angela explains her book is not a technical assembly instruction for providing the nuts and bolts of E zine assembly. She lays out the resources you will need and provides links to those resources along with brief explanation why you need to follow her lead.

From marketing account so you can take credit cards on your site, to where to obtain HTML software and on to boards and groups to begin promoting your E zine it is all here. A truly amazing virtual smorgasbord of everything you’ll need to begin publishing your online magazine.

All of this laid out for us by one with a proven track record beginning as a single mother a back story she shares along the way to her current life as a very successful publisher along with her husband Richard.

Publishing at Booklocker

I know and work with Richard and Angela as an author on their list. They are people I am proud to know and proud to recommend. Reading Angela’s article in her E zine Writer’sWeekly.com shows you what we are talking about here and confirms my testimony to her unfailing integrity at every step in the process of having my first book Misquoting Logic self-published through Booklocker.com and then Misquoting Calculus published by their traditional publishing wing Abuzz Press.

I have read this book and plan to put her advice into action very soon. I highly recommend this book as a must read for any author wishing to intelligently follow the pattern set forth by Angela Hoy as one who has achieved great success in the publishing industry.

Final Recommendations

As an author, I recommend Booklocker.com for publishing your works. Please tell her I sent you. Yes I benefit if you do. I recommend her because I am utterly satisfied with my experience in publishing my books with Richard and Angela Hoy. Thank you for visiting my site. Thank you for reading this post. Please come back soon as I will be writing more very soon. Chris.
